Marvel’s newest movie, Kraven the Hunter, tells the origin story of one of their most famous villains. Starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Kraven and directed by J.C. Chandor, this action-packed film had the potential to be something great. Unfortunately, it stumbles along the way, leaving fans and viewers disappointed.
When and Where to Watch
Kraven the Hunter will be available for streaming on January 14, 2025, and you can grab a physical copy on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, or DVD starting March 4, 2025.
What’s the Movie About?
The story follows Sergei Kravinoff, a man raised by his cruel Russian mobster father Nikolai (played by Russell Crowe). Sergei’s traumatic childhood and love for animals push him toward becoming “the greatest hunter in the world.” But instead of hunting animals, he hunts criminals.
While the idea sounds cool, the movie doesn’t quite deliver.

What Worked?
Aaron Taylor-Johnson does a solid job as Kraven. He brings a lot of energy and intensity to the role, especially in the fight scenes. The interactions between Kraven and his half-brother Demetri (Fred Hechinger) add a bit of heart to the story. Russell Crowe’s exaggerated performance as Kraven’s father also provides some unintentional laughs.

What Didn’t Work?
The movie struggles to figure out what it wants to be. It tries to mix serious storytelling with comic book fun, but it ends up feeling messy. The CGI animals look fake, which makes it hard to take Kraven’s bond with them seriously.
The action scenes, while entertaining at first, quickly become repetitive. Kraven’s special ability to work with animals isn’t explored as much as it should be, which feels like a missed opportunity.

Is It Worth Watching?
If you’re a hardcore Marvel fan, you might want to give Kraven the Hunter a shot. But for most people, it’s not worth the time or money. The movie doesn’t do justice to its characters or its story, making it yet another letdown in Sony’s attempt to create a Spider-Man universe without Spider-Man.

Final Thoughts
While the cast tries their best, the movie falls flat. With better writing and direction, Kraven the Hunter could have been a unique and exciting addition to Marvel’s lineup. Instead, it feels like a wasted opportunity.
